Collaborative projects
The Generics Across Languages (GAL) collaboration investigates how generic meanings are expressed across a wide range of languages. With Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, Suzi Lima, and Linnaea Stockall, and a network of international collaborators, the project uses a shared Generics Toolkit to build a systematic cross-linguistic picture of the morphosyntax and semantics of generic expressions.
The collaboration is ongoing: the toolkit has been used to collect data across a growing set of languages, and current work is extending both the empirical database and the theoretical questions it can address.
Prospective researchers
I welcome enquiries from prospective researchers interested in questions about meaning and cognition. I am particularly interested in projects connecting questions about syntactic and semantic representation with questions about conceptual and world knowledge and the composition, inference, and memory processes involved in production and comprehension.
Projects need not fall neatly within one of my current research programmes. What matters more is a clear theoretical question that engages with current linguistic and psycholinguistic theory and a good fit with my expertise.
If you are considering working with me, the Research page is the best indication of the kinds of questions and approaches that interest me.
Graduate research
I supervise research projects for students on Oxford’s DPhil, MPhil, and MSt (Research Preparation) in Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics programmes. Prospective students are welcome to contact me before applying. You do not need to send a fully developed research proposal in an initial email, and indeed, such an approach can be counterproductive. A short description of the problem you are interested in, why you think it connects with my research, and your relevant background is much more useful.
Formal admissions requirements, deadlines, and funding arrangements are handled by the University and Faculty. Please consult the Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics graduate admissions page for current information.
Postdoctoral researchers
I am happy to discuss postdoctoral projects that fit closely with my research programme, including applications for external fellowships hosted at Oxford. If you are considering developing a fellowship proposal with me, please get in touch well in advance of the deadline. Competitive proposals benefit from time to develop the research questions and intellectual fit together.
Funded postdoctoral positions attached to particular projects, when available, will be formally advertised.
Undergraduate research
I also supervise undergraduate research projects in language and cognition. Within the linguistics side of the MLL and PPL degrees, Paper C provides an opportunity to pursue an independent research project, and I supervise projects where the question and my expertise are a good fit. I also supervise Extended Projects for fourth-year Experimental Psychology and PPL students, with project allocation organised annually through Experimental Psychology.
If you are an Oxford undergraduate considering an independent project, the most useful starting point is a research question rather than a fully worked-out experiment. I am happy to discuss how a promising question might be developed into a feasible project.
